Margaret, I'm glad you had the openness to talk to the one person who could help you. I imagine that your companion was the only person in the area who could support your sanity and preserve his own, but many might have passed up the chance to experience him because of his appearance or race. I am still learning to keep my spirit open for these moments.

I rode Greyhound busses a few times and finally concluded that I was better off hitchhiking. I have not found it necessary to do either since the late 1980s, and I'm glad. I have never gone to Raleigh by bus; I'll make sure I never do that. While bus terminals in small places tend to be in places difficult to reach, the big-city ones typically put a person in a very rough neighborhood. I saw a Greyhound terminal in Saint Louis that had that same creepy feel to it, and the neighborhood looked even worse, so I didn't go outside the creepy terminal. Fortunately, I was only there for a few hours.

Wow; what a story! I'm glad you're OK, and were able to find a calm presence there. There seem to be more and more programs out there to help returning veterans - a good thing.

Wow! Thank you for writing it up and sharing it. I love the perspective you chose with the focus on the calm man. This story reminds me of a client I had in Korea. A young soldier trying to get home for leave flying military hops. He took some amphetamines so he wouldn't miss an opportunity to get on a plane then got paranoid on the flight and showed a knife to some guys who were giving him a hard time. He ended up in Leavenworth convicted of hijacking the military plane!

We'll never know what set that serviceman off. Sounds wrenching. Good thing you had a person to help you ground, at least part of the time. Travel can be tricky at times, thanks for sharing your experience..
